Golf in Punta Cana from Crystal Garden: a residence on the Las Iguanas course

Published October 21, 2026 7 min read

Most golf guides to Punta Cana start at a hotel and work out to the tee. Crystal Garden turns that around: the development publishes frontage on Las Iguanas, the second Jack Nicklaus course in Cap Cana, so the course is the view before it is a booking. This page explains what that course is and how far along it is, what a fairway address means in practice, and how far the other courses on this coast are by road from Crystal Garden's map pin.

What does it mean that Crystal Garden fronts Las Iguanas?

It means the 196 residences are planned beside a golf course rather than a road or a neighbouring block, and the development lists that frontage among its amenities. What it does not mean is a private course: Las Iguanas is run as its own club, and nothing Crystal Garden publishes gives an owner playing rights, a membership or a discount. Treat the fairway as a landscape you live beside and the round as something you book.

Two practical consequences follow. A course is open ground that will not be built on in the way a vacant lot can be, which is part of the appeal of a frontage address. And a working course has a working rhythm: maintenance crews and mowers start early, and golf carts pass during the day. Neither is unusual, but it is worth knowing before choosing which side of a building to live on.

How did Las Iguanas come back, and when will it be finished?

The course was drawn up in the mid-2000s, when Cap Cana was first being laid out, and then shelved after the 2008 financial crash. It sat unbuilt for more than 15 years until Nicklaus Design revived it in 2023, following the original routing except at holes five and six. The layout has ten lakes, dug partly to supply the fill that shapes the fairways and greens, and it reaches the sea late in the round: the 12th green touches the ocean, the par-three 13th runs alongside it and the 14th turns inland again. The designers expect the wind, not the length, to be what defends it.

By August 2026 the first nine holes were in operation, and the full course was expected to open in spring 2027. That is a published expectation, not a fixed date. For a buyer the point is timing: the course should be complete well before the building is, so the view an owner moves in beside should be a finished course rather than a construction site.

Who will be able to play it?

In 2024 the designer's firm said Las Iguanas is going to be available for the public to use, in contrast with Punta Espada, which the same firm describes as private. That was a statement of intent, not a published access policy or price list, so the honest answer for now is: expect a course meant to take outside players, and ask the club in writing about green fees, tee times and any resident arrangement once the full eighteen open.

The difference matters for an owner who rents. A guest who can book a round on the course outside the window is a different proposition from one who can only look at it, and that is a question to put to the club and to whoever manages the rental before you write it into a listing.

Which other courses are within reach of Crystal Garden?

Punta Espada, the established Nicklaus course in Cap Cana, is very close on the map and further by car. It opened in 2006, is a par 72 with eight holes on the ocean, and marks its 20th anniversary in 2026. From Crystal Garden's pin it is about 0.6 miles in a straight line but about 2.5 miles by road, because the drive goes round the community's internal avenues.

North of Cap Cana, the resort club that gave Punta Cana its name runs Corales, an 18-hole Tom Fazio course opened in 2010 with six holes beside the Caribbean, and La Cana, 27 holes by P.B. Dye with 14 holes looking at the sea, where caddies are mandatory. Up the coast past Bávaro, the Hard Rock Golf Club at Cana Bay is an 18-hole Nicklaus layout where water comes into play on 15 holes. The table puts them side by side as seen from Crystal Garden.

What should a golfer check before buying a fairway home?

Common questions

Is Crystal Garden on a golf course?
Yes. The development publishes frontage on Las Iguanas, a Nicklaus Design course in Cap Cana. The course is run as its own club; frontage does not by itself give an owner playing rights.
When will Las Iguanas be fully open?
Its first nine holes were in operation in August 2026, and the full course was expected to open in spring 2027. Treat that as an expectation and confirm it nearer the time.
How far is Punta Espada from Crystal Garden?
About 0.6 miles in a straight line and about 2.5 miles by road on open map data, because the route runs round Cap Cana's internal avenues.
Can the public play Las Iguanas?
Its designer's firm said in 2024 that the course is going to be available for the public to use. No access policy or green fee has been published yet, so ask the club in writing.
