A Dominican Christmas, from the first charamicos to the last grape of New Year's Eve

Published October 23, 2026 7 min read

Visitors tend to arrive for Christmas in the Dominican Republic around 20 December and leave after the first of January, which means they see the middle of the season and miss both ends of it. The decorations are on sale in October, and the night that many households mark with the most ritual is not Christmas Eve but New Year's Eve. This guide follows the season in order, from the first painted ornaments to the midnight grapes, and then looks at how a holiday fortnight works from Crystal Garden, a development of 196 residences on the Las Iguanas golf course in Cap Cana.

When does Christmas begin in the Dominican Republic?

Earlier than most visitors expect. The clearest sign is the charamico, a Dominican handicraft of Christmas ornaments: balls, small donkeys, trees, reindeer and even snowmen, made mainly from bejuco, a very flexible tropical wood, and painted by hand in strong colours. Vendors set them out from early October, and in Santo Domingo a stretch of Avenida Winston Churchill becomes the place in the city where they gather most densely.

The craft has had to compete with imported, factory-made decorations, and artisans interviewed by the Dominican press have said for years that sales are not what they were. That is a reason to look for them rather than assume you will find them on every corner. A charamico is also a sensible thing to bring home, or to keep: it is light, it is local and it says more about the place than a glass bauble does.

What happens on Christmas Eve, and which days does the country stop?

The night of 24 December, Nochebuena, is the family dinner, built around pork, with ensalada rusa, rice with pigeon peas, telera bread and a ponche to drink, and followed in many homes by the Misa de Gallo at midnight. In the weeks around it come the aguinaldos, friends going from house to house with carols, and the angelito, a gift exchange among family, friends or colleagues. Christmas Day itself is quiet: it is the day after the long night before.

On the calendar, Law 139-97 moves most Dominican holidays to a Monday, but 25 December and 1 January stay where they fall. In 2026 Christmas Day lands on a Friday, so the country takes a three-day weekend, and the year counts 12 national holidays in all. Three Kings' Day on 6 January is movable: in 2026 it was observed on Monday 5 January, and the Ministry of Labour publishes each year's dates, so check them before you plan around a bank or a notary.

How busy does Punta Cana get over the holidays?

Very. The Banco Central's tourism tables count 536,574 foreign non-resident passengers arriving at Punta Cana International Airport in December 2025, more than in any other month of that year. The mix changes, too. Canadians were the heavier presence in winter: 127,104 Canadian residents landed that December, against 96,033 in November. Arrivals from the United States, at 206,276, were high but below their March figure of 251,910, when spring break pulls them south.

Hotels fill to match. ASONAHORES, the hotel association, reported occupancy across the Punta Cana and Bávaro zone at 87.3% in December 2025. That is a figure for hotels across the whole zone, not for any residence, but it tells an owner when to book flights early, when the roads to the airport are busiest and why the days either side of Christmas are the ones to reserve for the family first.

What do Dominicans do at midnight on New Year's Eve?

For many households the turn of the year carries more ritual than Christmas does. A Dominican newspaper's list of the most common customs starts with the 12 grapes, one swallowed at each stroke of midnight with a wish attached, a habit shared with Spain. Then come the practical ones: sweeping, burning incense and moving the furniture to push the old year's bad luck out of the house, and throwing a bucket or glass of water out of the door for the same reason.

Some customs are about what the new year should bring. Underwear is chosen by colour: yellow for money, red for love, green for health. Lentils are cooked or handed out as a sign of abundance. And anyone hoping to travel takes a suitcase out at midnight and walks it down the street. None of this is universal, and plenty of families simply eat and dance, but a guest who sees a neighbour pulling an empty case along the road just after midnight will know what it means.

The season at a glance

The table runs the season in order, with the dates that are fixed by law and the ones that move.

A holiday fortnight at Crystal Garden

Crystal Garden's published distances suit a December stay. Punta Cana International Airport is about 20 minutes by car, which matters in the month the arrivals hall is at its fullest, and downtown Punta Cana about 30 minutes. Playa Caracol is roughly 1,800 ft away on foot, and Juanillo Beach is an 8-minute drive. The amenities the development publishes include barbecue terraces, a resort pool and a rooftop pool, and on-site restaurants, so a Nochebuena dinner at home and a New Year's Eve on the roof are both plausible plans.

Two practical notes. The Dominican Republic keeps Atlantic time all year without daylight saving, so in December it is one hour ahead of New York: the midnight grapes come an hour before the ball drops on television. And the development is scheduled for delivery in 2027, so the first Christmas an owner could spend here is a plan for later, not this year. If you intend to rent the residence for part of the season, decide early which of the two weeks the family keeps.

Common questions

What is a charamico?
A Dominican Christmas ornament, made mainly from bejuco, a flexible tropical wood, and painted by hand in bright colours: balls, small donkeys, trees, reindeer. They go on sale from early October.
Why do Dominicans walk a suitcase down the street on New Year's Eve?
It is a midnight custom for anyone who hopes to travel in the coming year. Others eat 12 grapes, one at each stroke of midnight, or throw water out of the house to send the old year's bad luck away.
Is New Year's Day a public holiday in the Dominican Republic?
Yes, and a fixed one: Law 139-97 moves most holidays to a Monday but leaves 1 January and 25 December where they fall. Three Kings' Day on 6 January can move.
Is Punta Cana crowded at Christmas?
December is a peak month. In December 2025, 536,574 foreign non-resident passengers landed at Punta Cana International Airport, and hotel occupancy in the Punta Cana and Bávaro zone was 87.3%. Book flights early.
What time is it in Punta Cana on New Year's Eve compared with New York?
One hour ahead. The Dominican Republic keeps Atlantic time all year with no daylight saving, so midnight in Punta Cana is 11 PM in New York in December.
